The Mediterranean Sea may have been filled in less than two years in a dramatic flood 5.33 million years ago in which water poured in from the Atlantic, a study suggests. Sea water flooded in through the Strait of Gibraltar at a rate three times the current flow of the Amazon River, says the study in "Today's Nature".  Scientists generally agree that about 5.6 million years ago the Mediterranean Sea had become disconnected from the world's oceans and mostly evaporated in the hundreds of thousands of years that followed, only to be refilled when Atlantic waters found a way through the present Gibraltar strait.  But estimates for how long the refill took have varied greatly.  In the new study, a team led by Daniel Garcia-Castellanos of the Research Council of Spain used borehole and seismic data to reveal a 125-mile channel across the Gibraltar strait that was carved out by the floodwaters; also, computer models estimated that 90% of the water was transferred in a period of a few months to two years.  # END OF ARTICLE
